He came home. There was no rain, no foreshadowing. He cranked the brake forward and the rusted car jerked to a stop. He got out of the vehicle, whistling a tune, a tune, that should have been a funeral dirge, had he known. He walked up the steps; they creaked, like they did every day. But today they had a tone of chill, a groan that could only mean doom. He could not hear them, for his heart was light. He could not fathom the indicators of a devastating day; he was oblivious. His hand reached forward, there was no hesitation. How could there be? This day had gone very well; he could not wait to tell his wife, and his little daughter. The precious pearls of his life. How could he have known the jewels in the crown of his life, had been removed, forever. He skipped up the stairs, a bounding joy matching the jump in his feet. Life was improved! They could all move to any place they wanted. Everything had gone right this day. He felt glorious! He wanted to share it with those who meant most to him. He had walked halfway down the hall before seeing the note. A note, solitary in its bleak whiteness, stapled to the door of his bedroom. He thought briefly of being angry, but the moment passed. He could forgive his daughter for ruining the varnish today. It would all be fixed by tomorrow. He tore off the note, didn’t look at it, and just continued into his room. His heart collapsed. His daughter lie swimming on the floor! Swimming in her blood! He took up her head, burying it in his chest as he sobbed and cried; the horror of it pounding into his temples like a spike. Behind him on the floor -soaking up the crimson liquid- lay the forgotten note. Three chilling words scrawled on its surface.
